SPOKEN WORD — Ode to SOTU

He stands there and states he’s “ready to work”,
Though suited and coiffed he has a small quirk;
The work that he speaks of is in front of a screen,
Fox News fawns and flatters while the president preens.
“America’s interests should always come first,”
says the man whose agenda is forever immersed,
in “me” and in “mine” and don’t forget “I”,
or “greatest” or “best”; much pounding of chest
as he speaks in cliches, “Believe me”, he pleads,
“They’re mobs at the border and this country needs
A wall to protect us, from drugs, rape, and crime.
It was neglected for decades, and now is the time.”
Nevermind that his truth is far left of the facts,
or that his crew’s malice has led to cruel acts
that split apart families, and shattered young souls.
He boasts, “…we have cut more regulations”, and holes
in protections remain where those rules were carved out,
and his buds will make millions cuz they have the clout,
to finance campaigns where the White House is sold
for power, prestige, and perhaps Russian gold.
“We must embrace,” says the pinkie twerking midair,
“cooperation, compromise…” He hasn’t a prayer
of being believed when we’ve witnessed his bluster,
namecalling spiels that tarnish the luster
of a nation in pain, mourning civil freedoms and rights
for all women, for blacks, Asians, Hispanics and whites.
under the chopping block Donald’s ego has built
we’ve lost global friends and now face global guilt.
How do I know our land’s reput has been crushed?
Did you not hear the silence when Pence said “Trump”, the hush?
